Building a BDC motor controller can be quite simple, but it still involves some challenges. These can relate to both circuit design and firmware development. Let’s take a look at the things that may need your special attention.

DC motors may find use in different devices and systems depending on their characteristics. Thus, stepper and servo motors power machines that require precision positioning such as:

Motor power relies on the current supplied by the power source. Thus, a low-power BDC motor needs a low current controller and vice versa. A high current DC motor controller typically uses a switching regulator.

In the circuit diagram, slider of the potentiometer is connected to analog input pin A0 of arduino. Resistor R1 limits the base current of the transistor Q1.

The other classifications are typical of almost any electrical motor’s controller. Let’s briefly go over them through the example of a brushed DC motor controller.

The shunt field current is relatively small, the field rheostat has to carry a very small current and hence I2R loss is so small. It is an efficient method of controlling the speed of a DC shunt motor. Using this method, speeds above the no-load speed can be achieved.

We’ll have to do this step just to have the TIM_HAL files added to our project by CubeMX. And also it gives us a startup configuration for the PWM channel of that specific timer module as we’ll see hereafter. This is the best way to keep the code generic and portable to any STM32 microcontroller.

While sensors offer obvious advantages, they come with disadvantages as well. Some sensors have low tolerance to dust, and require regular maintenance. Others operate properly over only a limited range of temperatures. The use of sensors, and the implementation of all the attendant circuitry, increases manufacturing costs; and highly precise sensors are of course the most expensive.

The BLDC motor has a different from brushed dc motor to number of leads, and the connection is more complicated.

Here are some guidelines and requirements that I did consider before designing the DC_MOTOR driver library with the current APIs. It can be improved in the future but for the beginning, it should be in line with the following:

The two most simple ways to control the resistance is to use resistors and potentiometers. Resistors provide a fixed resistance of any value while a potentiometer provides an adjustable range of resistances. When either are used correctly in a circuit, they provide control over the speed of the DC motor. These circuits are most easily done using a breadboard; however, buying screw down components, using electrical tape, or soldering (if you are properly qualified) also works.

Applying current when the rotor position is unknown may cause the rotor to turn in the wrong direction. The use of sensors prevents this problem.

Connect the other terminal of the DC motor to the unused terminal of the power supply. If the power supply is not off or has pelo switch, then the motor may begin spinning once it is connected to the power supply.
